| The changes in the number and structure of pesticide registrations in China in 2020 are closely linked to shifts in the external market environment, market demand, and regulatory policies. We have compiled data on pesticide registrations in China for the first half of 2020 and conducted an analysis from multiple perspectives, aiming to provide enterprises with useful guidance for future registration efforts.
I. Overview of Pesticide Registrations in the First Half of 2020
In the first half of 2020 (January 1, 2020 – June 30, 2020), China registered 474 new pesticide products, including 445 for field crops and 29 for public health applications. The total number of registrations increased by 378% year-on-year compared with 2019, while declining by 59% and 87.34% relative to 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Following a sharp decline in the number of pesticide registrations in 2019, the first half of 2020 saw a noticeable rebound; however, the figure still falls far short of the levels recorded in 2017 and 2018. |

| II. Characteristics of Pesticide Registration in the First Half of 2020
1. Statistics by pesticide category
The pesticide categories with the highest number of registrations are herbicides (172 entries), fungicides (113 entries), insecticides (96 entries), and plant growth regulators (33 entries). |

| 2. Statistics by dosage form
A total of 34 formulation types have been registered, with the five most frequently registered being suspension concentrates (116), emulsifiable concentrates (67), soluble concentrates (47), dispersible oil‑in‑water suspensions (47), and granules (35). Suspension concentrates continue to hold a clear dominant position among all registered formulations. |

Among single‑ingredient products, thiamethoxam (10 applications), clothianidin (8 applications), and oxaziclomefone (8 applications) were the most frequently registered. Among formulated mixtures, the most registered combinations were cyhalofop‑butyl plus oxaziclomefone (9 applications), etoxazole plus bifenazate (5 applications), and acifluorfen plus glufosinate‑ammonium (5 applications). |

Among the 205 active ingredients, the five with the highest number of registrations are, in order: pyraclostrobin (28 registrations), thiamethoxam (24 registrations), clothianidin (24 registrations), and oxaziclomefone (21 registrations). |

| 5. Statistics by manufacturing enterprise
In the first half of 2020, 240 companies obtained pesticide registration certificates. Among them, Jiangxi Zhonghe Chemical Co., Ltd. and Hailir Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. each secured 10 such certificates, making them the companies with the highest number of registrations. |

In the first half of 2020, there were more than 70 registered crop uses for pesticides, primarily concentrated on rice, citrus trees, wheat, and others. |

| 6. Registration Status of Biopesticides
In the first half of 2020, a total of 54 biopesticides were approved, including 17 biochemical pesticides, 7 microbial pesticides, 29 agricultural antibiotics, and 1 plant‑derived pesticide. By contrast, only 22 biopesticides received approval in 2019. |

| III. The first insecticide for controlling the fall armyworm has been registered.
The situation regarding the control of the fall armyworm in China remains severe. Notably, in June this year, the country’s first pesticide approved for fall armyworm management was granted registration. Shanxi Luhai Agrochemical Technology Co., Ltd.’s 30 billion spores per gram Beauveria bassiana wettable powder (registration number PD20190002) has received an expanded‑use registration, adding corn fall armyworm, leek maggot, and the gypsy moth to its registered crops and target pests; previously, it was registered only for controlling the European corn borer in corn fields.
According to available data, Beauveria bassiana is a fungal microbial insecticide that infects its host by penetrating the insect’s cuticle, respiratory tract, and digestive system, degrading the cuticle and disrupting body tissues, ultimately leading to death. In 2019 and 2020, it was consecutively included in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs’ list of recommended emergency control agents for fall armyworm. |
