On December 9, the National Agricultural Technology Center convened an online consultation meeting on the 2023 national trends in the occurrence of major crop diseases and pests. The meeting reviewed the key characteristics of major crop diseases and pests in 2022, discussed the projected trends for 2023, and outlined priority tasks for monitoring and early warning in the coming year.
Academician Kang Zhensheng of Northwest A&F University, along with experts from the Institute of Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the National Meteorological Center, and other institutions, delivered presentations on the fall armyworm, Wheat Specialized reports on aphid and rice stem borer monitoring and forecasting, as well as climate trend predictions. The meeting emphasized that plant protection agencies at all levels should seize the major opportunities for advancing the monitoring and forecasting sector, intensify efforts to publicize and implement relevant regulations and guidelines—such as the Measures for the Monitoring and Forecasting of Crop Pests and Diseases and the Methods for Monitoring and Surveying Class I Crop Pests and Diseases—promote the implementation of local plans for building grassroots plant disease‑and‑pest‑control systems, strengthen the development of standardized regional stations and grassroots monitoring and forecasting teams, innovate by establishing multi‑source pest and disease databases and numerical prediction models, and accelerate the realization of digital, precision‑based monitoring and early warning.
More than 150 officials—including heads of plant protection agencies, section chiefs, and key technical personnel—from the plant protection institutions of all 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government attended the meeting at sub-venues. Wang Ge, Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Technology Extension Center; Wang Jianqiang, Director of the Plant Protection and Quarantine Division of the Department of Crop Production Management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; and Lu Yanhui, Director of the Institute of Plant Protection at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, attended the meeting and delivered remarks.
