Recently, the National Bureau of Statistics released data indicating that, based on a sample survey of actual early rice yields in 10 provinces and autonomous regions, China’s total early rice output this year is estimated at 28.123 million tonnes (56.25 billion jin), up 106,000 tonnes (210 million jin) from 2021, or a 0.4% increase.
“Against the backdrop of the global pandemic’s widespread spread and a complex, challenging international environment, China has achieved a bumper summer grain harvest and stable early‑rice production, laying a solid foundation for a bountiful grain yield for the year and providing robust support for stabilizing the macroeconomic landscape and keeping economic performance within an appropriate range,” said a senior official from the Rural Division of the National Bureau of Statistics.
Since the beginning of this year, the state has continued to raise the minimum procurement price for rice, increased rewards for major grain-producing counties, and boosted financial investment, adopting a multi-pronged approach to stabilize double-cropping rice production. Localities at all levels have firmly shouldered their responsibilities for grain production, implemented national policies such as rice subsidies, one-time subsidies for farmers who actually grow grain, and agricultural machinery purchase subsidies, and introduced complementary support measures. Zhejiang has established a mechanism linking grain‑production costs with subsidy adjustments, rolled out province‑wide full‑cost insurance for rice cultivation, and ensured full coverage of contracted purchases for early‑season rice. Hubei has actively encouraged suitable areas to expand the acreage and increase yields of double‑cropping rice, fully tapping the potential of available land. Guangdong has introduced incentive and subsidy policies to expand double‑cropping rice, promoted cooperation among villages, enterprises, and towns, and launched initiatives to bring fallow farmland back into cultivation and resume planting.
A series of policies and measures has further safeguarded farmers’ incomes from grain production, effectively boosting their enthusiasm for planting early-season rice. This year, early-season rice was sown at the optimal time, with a national sown area of 71.326 million mu, an increase of 315,000 mu, or 0.4 percent, compared with 2021. Among them, Zhejiang, Hubei, and Guangdong saw increases of 166,000 mu, 92,000 mu, and 85,000 mu, respectively, reflecting steady growth in sown areas.
