    2022 Green Pest and Disease Control Technical Plan for Cowpea (Excerpt)

    To guide localities in implementing green production of yardlong beans, enhance the application of green pest and disease management technologies, and ensure the safety and quality of yardlong bean production, this plan has been specially formulated.

      

    I. Prevention and Control Objectives

      

    In cowpea-growing areas, the coverage rate of integrated pest and disease management exceeds 90%, with an overall control efficacy of at least 85% and damage losses kept below 10%.

      

    II. Prevention and Control Strategies

      

    Implement the plant protection policy of “prevention first, integrated pest management.” By coordinating the application of healthy cultivation practices, biological control, physicochemical trapping and monitoring, and judicious use of chemical pesticides, effectively manage the major diseases and pests of cowpea.

      

    III. Key Target Groups for Prevention and Control

      

    The major insect pests of cowpea include leafminers, pod borer, thrips, aphids, beet armyworm, cotton bollworm, and red spider mites; the principal diseases comprise rust, powdery mildew, anthracnose, viral diseases, wilt, and gray mold.

      

    IV. Prevention and Control Measures

    (5) Rational Use of Medications

      

    Select and apply high‑efficacy, low‑risk pesticides scientifically. Based on the incidence of diseases and pests, implement timely, precision‑targeted control measures. Before planting, treat seeds and soil; during the seedling and growth stages, apply pesticides through root drenching or foliar sprays. Rotate pesticides with different modes of action, and strictly adhere to recommended application rates, methods, frequencies, and pre‑harvest intervals.

      

    1. Pest Control. (1) Thrips: During the seedling stage, apply systemic insecticides such as thiamethoxam via foliar spray or root drenching; during the growing period, use formulations including Metarhizium anisopliae CQMa421, matrine, spinosad, emamectin benzoate, imidacloprid–chlorantraniliprole, acetamiprid, and thiamethoxam. (2) Bean pod borer: Options include Bacillus thuringiensis, indoxacarb, spinosad, lambda‑cyhalothrin, cyantraniliprole, chlorantraniliprole, emamectin benzoate, and flufenoxuron. (3) Beet armyworm: Suitable agents are beet armyworm nucleopolyhedrovirus, Metarhizium anisopliae CQMa421, and flufenoxuron. (4) Leafminer: Recommended products include spinosad and cyantraniliprole. (5) Aphids: Use Metarhizium anisopliae CQMa421, matrine, pymetrozine, cyantraniliprole, thiamethoxam, lambda‑cyhalothrin, and acetamiprid. (6) Spider mites: Options comprise matrine, abamectin, and lambda‑cyhalothrin.

      

    2. Disease and pest management: (1) Rust: Use agents such as sulfur–mancozeb, pyraclostrobin–azoxystrobin, or cyproconazole. (2) Powdery mildew: Use agents such as osthole, cyproconazole, pyraclostrobin–azoxystrobin, or flutriafol–cyprodinil. (3) Anthracnose: Use agents such as cyproconazole, benzoic acid–azoxystrobin, or flutriafol–cyprodinil.

      

    V. Precautions

      

    Strictly control the use of pesticides during the harvest period to prevent pesticide residues from exceeding regulatory limits. During this phase, prioritize the use of natural enemies and microbial pesticides; do not apply any pesticides with a pre-harvest interval longer than three days. The following active ingredients are registered for cowpea and have a pre-harvest interval of three days or less (inclusive): osthole, matrine, Metarhizium anisopliae, Bacillus thuringiensis, Spodoptera exigua nucleopolyhedrovirus, mancozeb–zinc, pyraclostrobin–azoxystrobin, thifluzamide–pyrazole ester, fluopyram–fluquinconazole, spinosad, abamectin, cyantraniliprole, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, indoxacarb, lambda‑cyhalothrin, and flonicamid.
