Certis’s insecticide InSyst (acetamiprid) has received emergency authorization from the UK government for use on sugar beets.

Recently, following applications submitted by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) Sugar Crops Committee and British Sugar, Certis’s insecticide InSyst (acetamiprid) has been granted emergency authorization by the government. This year, beet growers can use Certis’s InSyst to control green peach aphids and prevent infection with beet yellowing disease.

This application was jointly submitted by the NFU and British Sugar, with technical support from the British Beet Research Organisation (BBRO). According to BBRO, the green peach aphid is expected to appear in the third week of May.

Professor Mark Stevens, Scientific Director at Certis, stated that June will be a “critical month” for beet aphids. If control of aphids and beet yellowing disease is required, the combined use of InSyst and Teppeki can provide additional crop protection.

Professor Stevens said, “The 2020/21 growing season left behind numerous potential sources of pathogens; fields, abandoned soil piles, and sugar beets still awaiting harvest all pose risks of harboring viruses.”

He also reminded growers that aphicide applications should be made only when the threshold of one green, wingless aphid per four plants at the 12‑true‑leaf stage is reached.

Under InSyst’s emergency authorization, the crop may be treated with this insecticide only if the threshold is still met after the first application of Teppeki.

The emergency authorization will expire on July 31.
