Xia Jingyuan, former director of the National Agricultural Technology Extension Center, has been appointed Director-General of the Plant Production and Protection Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Recently, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) issued a Director-General’s bulletin appointing Xia Jingyuan as Director of the Plant Production and Protection Division.

Xia Jingyuan graduated in 1981 from Huazhong Agricultural University with a degree in Plant Protection. In 1988, he earned a master’s degree in entomology from the University of the Philippines/International Rice Research Institute, and in 1997, he obtained a doctoral degree in entomology from Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands.

In 1982, he joined the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, where he successively held the positions of Deputy Director and Director of the Plant Protection Laboratory, as well as Director of the Institute.

From 2001 to 2011, he served as Director of the National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and as a senior extension researcher.

From 2012 to 2014, he served as China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy, and concurrently as Minister Plenipotentiary.

In 2015, he joined the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as Secretary-General of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), commonly referred to as “the FAO,” was officially established on October 16, 1945. Its headquarters are located in Rome, Italy. It is the earliest permanent specialized agency within the United Nations system and serves as an international organization where member countries discuss issues related to food and agriculture.

Its mission is to improve the nutritional status and living standards of the people, enhance the production and distribution of agricultural products, strengthen the economic conditions of rural areas and farmers, promote global economic development, and ensure that humanity is free from hunger.
