    The beet armyworm poses a risk of severe outbreaks in localized areas of Hebei and Shandong provinces.

    According to monitoring by the pest and disease forecasting network for summer maize in the Huang-Huai-Hai region, the first-generation adults of the two-spotted armyworm have emerged in relatively large numbers this year. Favorable field conditions and future climatic prospects suggest that the pest is expected to occur at a moderate level across the major summer maize‑growing areas of the Huang-Huai-Hai region. In localized areas of Hebei and Shandong where fields are heavily mulched, outbreaks may be more severe, whereas regions with effective ecological management practices and minimal field mulch are likely to experience lighter infestations.       In late May and early June, provinces including Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, Shanxi, Shandong, and Hebei entered the peak emergence period for first-generation adults. From June 1 to 14, cumulative moth catches at monitoring sites in Gucheng, Ningjin, Zhengding, Cang County, and Linxi in Hebei ranged from 4,600 to 8,800 moths—levels that represent either the highest or second-highest totals recorded for this time of year since 2012. In Shandong, Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu, cumulative catches at monitoring stations fell between 500 and 1,400 moths; among these, Zhangqiu in Shandong, Feng County in Jiangsu, Xiaoxian and Qiao in Anhui, as well as Minquan and Xun County in Henan, reported the highest levels in recent years.     2. Field habitats are conducive to larval occurrence and damage.

      3. Meteorological conditions are generally favorable for the occurrence and damage caused by the two-spotted armyworm.
      According to monitoring and forecasts from the National Meteorological Center, eastern Shandong and most of Henan are expected to experience above-normal precipitation from June 8 to 18. Over the next 20 days, cumulative rainfall in the Jianghuai region and the central and eastern parts of the Huanghuai Plain is forecast to range from 60 to 90 millimeters, while in North China and other areas it will be 15 to 30 millimeters. Compared with the long-term average for this period, rainfall in the Huanghuai and Jianghuai regions is likely to be 20% to 50% above normal, with some localized areas seeing increases of 100% or more. The pronounced precipitation across North China, the Huanghuai Plain, and the Jianghuai region has created field conditions favorable for the emergence and damage caused by the larvae of the two-spotted armyworm. After June 20, parts of eastern North China and the Huanghuai Plain are expected to experience 4 to 6 days of intermittent heat, which will exert a moderating influence on adult oviposition, egg hatching, and larval development and feeding.
