Plant protection products containing these two active ingredients may be manufactured and imported only during a one-year grace period, after which their sale and use will be prohibited two years from February 19, 2019. Chlorpyrifos and fipronil are active ingredients in many commonly used pesticides. However, due to their toxicological risks, they have been banned in numerous countries and on a variety of crops. Vietnam is the primary destination for China’s exports of chlorpyrifos and fipronil, and the aforementioned resolution will have a significant impact on Chinese exports.

According to data from an AGROPAGES survey, in 2018 China exported a total of 40,000 tons of chlorpyrifos technical grade and formulated products, valued at US$250 million. Vietnam was the largest importing country, accounting for 11% of the total and involving 58 Chinese companies. In 2018, China also exported 49,000 tons of fipronil technical grade and formulated products, worth US$200 million; Vietnam ranked as the third-largest importer, with an 11% share, and the shipments involved 44 Chinese enterprises.
