Pesticide nomenclature has entered the “one active ingredient, one name” era! The revised edition of the “Chinese Generic Names of Pesticides” will take effect on January 1, 2027.

On January 22, 2026, the National Standardization Administration issued a new version of the national standard “Chinese Generic Names of Pesticides,” which will take effect on January 1, 2027.

This standard is a mandatory national standard governing the regulation and use of pesticides, applicable to the use of pesticide names across multiple sectors, including pesticide management, research, production, trade, and pesticide application.

The revised standard strictly adheres to the principle of “one active ingredient, one name.” Its content is better aligned with current needs, with 236 new pesticide varieties added, over 500 varieties that no longer meet present‑day requirements removed, and certain chemical names and structural formulas corrected. As a result, pesticide nomenclature has become more precise, microbial pesticide classification more standardized, and the overall format and ordering more scientifically organized.

Meanwhile, the consistent use of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) English generic names for cross-referencing helps enhance the alignment between China’s pesticide standards and international standards.

Following the implementation of the new standard, it will help curb the misuse of trade names for pesticides and the dilution of their common names, thereby preventing the occurrence of “different products with the same name” and “the same product with different names.” This will reduce the risk of farmers purchasing and using pesticides incorrectly, ensuring, at the source, the quality of agricultural products and the safety of the ecological environment. The promulgation and enforcement of this new standard will play a crucial role in regulating the pesticide market, purifying the market environment, safeguarding both medication safety and agricultural production safety, and advancing the industry’s move toward standardization and digitalization.
