    Data‑driven reform in plant protection! Ten universities, in collaboration with industry partners, have jointly built a high‑quality, multimodal dataset for plant protection.

    Recently, the “National High-Quality Dataset for Crop Diseases, Pests, Weeds, and Pesticides in Multimodal Plant Protection,” led by Guizhou University, was selected as one of the first batch of pilot projects for the construction of high-quality datasets nationwide. This designation makes Guizhou University one of six national pilot sites in the agricultural sector and the only institution in Guizhou Province currently serving as a national pilot for high‑quality dataset development. This achievement not only fills a critical gap in China’s efforts to build high‑quality datasets for agricultural plant protection but also positions Guizhou University as a frontrunner in the data‑driven reform of plant protection.

     

    This pilot project is led by Guizhou University, in collaboration with ten leading agricultural universities—Zhejiang University, China Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Northwest A&F University, Huazhong Agricultural University, Southwest University, South China Agricultural University, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, and Jilin University. To address the shortage of high-quality data and the issue of data silos in China’s plant protection field, plant protection experts from these institutions, working alongside computer science specialists, are jointly undertaking the development of a multimodal plant protection dataset across China’s seven major crop-producing regions.

     

    As the wave of artificial intelligence sweeps across the globe, high-quality datasets tailored to specific domains are increasingly becoming the “new infrastructure” underpinning AI applications. To address the shortage of such high‑quality data in various industries, the National Data Administration has launched a nationwide initiative to pilot and advance the development of high‑quality datasets, selecting projects across 18 key sectors and five innovation areas. The National Key Laboratory of Green Pesticides at Guizhou University, together with the State‑Province Co‑built National Key Laboratory of Public Big Data, jointly submitted a proposal. In collaboration with the China–Sri Lanka Joint Laboratory for Green Tea‑Pest Control Technologies under the Belt and Road Initiative, and leveraging the strengths and distinctive features of Guizhou University’s plant protection and big data disciplines, the project successfully passed multiple rounds of provincial-level defenses, received endorsement from the Guizhou Provincial Big Data Development Administration, and was approved by the National Data Administration. As a result, it was selected as one of the 140 national pilot projects across 23 fields, announced at the 2025 China International Big Data Industry Expo.

    Phase I of the project involves an investment of RMB 90 million and aims to establish a high-quality, multimodal plant protection data service platform that spans the entire smart plant protection industry chain, addresses complex agricultural application scenarios nationwide, and features scientific data value and human–machine collaboration. By transforming high‑quality plant protection data into key digital inputs for smart plant protection, the platform will enhance existing plant protection operations, accelerate the development of smart plant protection in China, and drive the integration of artificial intelligence into the plant protection sector, thereby further empowering the industry.

     

    Guizhou University stated that, going forward, it will continue to leverage its interdisciplinary strengths, collaborating with top agricultural universities, research institutions, and leading enterprises both domestically and internationally to jointly build and share a national-level multimodal plant protection dataset. By harnessing the power of data to advance agriculture and driving the future through intelligent technologies, the university aims to contribute “the Guizhou University way” to safeguarding national food security and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
