At a press conference held by the State Administration for Market Regulation on the 6th, Liu Hongsheng, Director-General of the Standards and Technology Department, stated that China has essentially established a national standards system to curb food waste. These standards take into account various dining formats, including dine-in and takeout, and cover key settings such as tourist hotels and institutional cafeterias, thereby largely meeting the practical needs of all stakeholders in implementing measures to combat food waste.

Liu Hongsheng stated that, to date, China has issued eight national standards, including the “Norms for Credit Rating of the Hotel Industry,” and is currently developing four additional national standards, such as the “General Provisions for Anti-Food-Waste Management in the Catering Industry,” with six more national standards slated for approval. Furthermore, requirements to curb food waste in the catering sector have been incorporated into other standards covering areas like tourist homestays and tourism resort zones.

Meanwhile, in response to the diverse dining formats and customs across regions, local authorities and industry associations have tailored their approaches, leveraging both group standards and local standards to form a coordinated framework alongside national standards. To date, localities have formulated or revised a total of 61 local standards aimed at curbing food waste, while relevant industry associations have developed more than 20 group standards to regulate business practices in production and operations.
