On the morning of July 16, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to present an overview of China’s national economic performance in the first half of 2020. Liu Aihua, spokesperson for the National Bureau of Statistics and Director-General of the Department of Comprehensive Statistics on the National Economy, stated that the country’s total summer grain output reached 142.81 million tons, up 1.21 million tons, or 0.9 percent, from the previous year.
Data show that in the first half of the year, the value added of agriculture (crop farming) increased by 3.8% year on year, with the growth rate accelerating by 0.3 percentage points compared with the first quarter; in particular, growth in the second quarter reached 3.9%, up 0.4 percentage points from the first quarter. The national total summer grain output amounted to 142.81 million tonnes, an increase of 1.21 million tonnes, or 0.9%, over the previous year. The agricultural planting structure continued to improve, with expanded sown areas for oilseed crops and other cash crops.
China’s summer grain production has once again achieved a bumper harvest, with output reaching a record high. This has laid a solid foundation for ensuring stable grain production throughout the year, bolstered confidence in steadily advancing the “Six Stabilities” and fully implementing the “Six Guarantees,” and further strengthened the groundwork for building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and securing a decisive victory in the battle against poverty.
