On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, an explosion at the plant of a pesticide company, Yashasvi Rasayan Pvt Ltd, located in the Dahej Special Economic Zone in Gujarat, western India, left at least five people dead and another 57 with severe burns. The injured are receiving treatment at several hospitals in Bharuch district.

The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, but local officials said a fire broke out in the company’s warehouse area around noon.

Local official MD Modia said that following the tank explosion, nearly 5,000 residents from two villages near the factory in Gujarat’s Bharuch district were urgently evacuated as a precaution. He added, “The fire remains uncontrolled, and firefighters are working to bring it under control. However, there has been no gas leak, so nearby residents are not at risk.”

Due to lax safety standards, industrial accidents are common in India. Just recently, the country’s COVID‑19 lockdowns have begun to ease, and many factories are now resuming operations.

Last month, a gas leak at a chemical plant in Visakhapatnam district, eastern India—owned by South Korea’s LG Chem—resulted in 12 fatalities.
