Thailand will impose bans on three types of pesticides.

Recently, Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives announced that, in light of the three substances—paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorpyrifos— Pesticide Import licenses have been suspended, and no renewals have been granted since June 30, 2019. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives convened a four-party working committee comprising the Department of Agricultural Extension, importers, farmers, and consumers, which unanimously voted to ban paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorpyrifos. Effective December 1, 2019, Thailand is prohibited from importing, selling, or using products containing these three active ingredients.
The decision will be submitted to the National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC). The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives stated that the NHSC will be asked to classify paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorpyrifos as Category 4 hazardous substances, effective December 1. Possession, distribution, importation, and production of these chemicals will be prohibited. In 2017, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health also attempted to impose this ban, but it ultimately failed due to opposition from other agencies that advocated for their continued use.
