Qu Dongyu officially assumed office as the first Chinese Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

| On the afternoon of the 31st, local time, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations held a handover ceremony for its Director-General at its headquarters in Rome, Italy. Qu Dongyu of China officially succeeded José Graziano da Silva as the organization’s eighth Director-General, becoming the first Chinese national to hold this post in the FAO’s history. At the handover ceremony, Qu Dongyu expressed his gratitude to José Graziano da Silva, who was concluding his term, commending his many years of dedicated service at FAO. He pledged to work hand in hand with staff from all countries, strengthen mutual trust, and strive to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In turn, José Graziano da Silva presented a commemorative gift to Qu Dongyu and wished him every success in his future endeavors. |

On June 23, at the 41st Session of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s Conference, member states conducted a secret ballot, with each country casting one vote, to elect Qu Dongyu as the Organization’s ninth Director-General, for a term from August 1, 2019, to July 31, 2023.
Qu Dongyu was born in 1963 and holds a Ph.D. in genetic breeding. He has spent many years conducting research on potato genetics, breeding, and biotechnology, and has been awarded the “World Potato Industry Outstanding Contribution Award.”
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to ensuring food security and achieving the Zero Hunger goal. With 194 member countries, FAO operates in more than 130 nations worldwide. The eighth Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, was first elected in 2011 and has since been re-elected for two consecutive terms.
