A research team from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom and Fera Science Ltd has uncovered evidence suggesting that fipronil may be the true culprit behind the mass bee deaths in France during the 1990s. According to reports, after French farmers began using two insecticides—imidacloprid and fipronil—bees started dying in large numbers between 1994 and 1998. Once farmers stopped using these products, the phenomenon of mass bee mortality eased. Many farmers and environmentalists have blamed imidacloprid for the decline, but in fact, a direct link between the use of imidacloprid and the mass bee die-offs has never been established.

The research report indicates that, after the first week of exposure to fipronil, honeybee mortality was 4,000 to 9,000 individuals higher than in the control group, whereas under the same experimental conditions, honeybee populations exposed to imidacloprid exhibited significantly lower mortality compared to the first group.
Research indicates that fipronil is more likely to accumulate in honeybees, whereas imidacloprid does not. Consequently, prolonged or repeated exposure to fipronil poses a greater threat to honeybee health. The study further notes that, because fipronil has never been identified as a cause of mass bee deaths, pesticide manufacturers worldwide continue to rely on this active ingredient for pest control, thereby posing a potential risk to bee populations.
