BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) — By reporter Dai Xiahe: On the 28th, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced that the State Council Food Safety Office recently held talks with officials from the governments of Chengdu and Hechuan District in Chongqing, which were implicated in food safety issues exposed during the 2026 “March 15” Gala. The office urged local authorities to rigorously investigate and prosecute illegal activities in accordance with the law, conduct a thorough analysis of the root causes of these problems, identify weak links in their work, draw broader lessons from individual cases, and implement effective measures to address them, thereby effectively safeguarding public food safety.

The State Administration for Market Regulation also held talks with the heads of the municipal governments of Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Suzhou, Zhengzhou, and Shenyang regarding other related issues exposed during the gala.

The meeting emphasized that the issues exposed during the “March 15” gala stem fundamentally from the failure to effectively enforce the principal responsibility of certain producers and operators, while also revealing inadequate fulfillment of local regulatory responsibilities in some areas, insufficient capacity to identify problems, and significant shortcomings and loopholes in routine supervision and inspection.

The meeting emphasized that relevant local governments must deeply recognize the paramount importance of food safety and maintaining market order, earnestly strengthen their sense of responsibility, urgency, and mission, and rigorously implement the “four strictest” requirements. They are to conduct thorough, law-based investigations into the issues exposed during the gala, sustaining a high-pressure stance of severe punishment and stringent enforcement. Responsibilities must be firmly enforced, with serious accountability pursued in accordance with regulations, disciplinary rules, and the law against all responsible entities and individuals, and “dual investigation” carried out in a solid and systematic manner. Lessons from these problems must be thoroughly drawn, with comprehensive inspections and rectification efforts undertaken to address similar risks and shortcomings; oversight must be strengthened across the entire chain and in all sectors, risk‑prevention and mitigation mechanisms must be improved, and recurrence of such issues must be resolutely prevented, thereby effectively safeguarding consumers’ legitimate rights and interests and fostering a safe and trustworthy consumption environment.
