Early‑spring chemical control is an important strategy for managing wheat sheath blight. In practice, formulations such as Jinggang–Bacillus velezensis and Jinggang–Bacillus subtilis are commonly used; however, these products have short residual activity, and farmers often wait until the disease has already established before applying them, resulting in limited efficacy. Thifluzamide, a benzamide‑type fungicide registered for the control of rice sheath blight, exhibits high selectivity and demonstrates strong protective and curative effects against diseases including rust, smut, and sheath blight, with a residual period of 30 to 45 days.
Recent research on the application of thiophanate‑methyl in wheat has shown that, prior to tillering and jointing—on March 5 and March 15—applying 10 mL and 20 mL per mu, respectively, of a 24% thiophanate‑methyl suspension concentrate resulted in disease control efficacies of 94.38% and 97.78%, and 97.41% and 97.41%, with no incidence of white‑spike symptoms. In contrast, when the same formulation was applied on April 5 and April 15, after the crop had entered the jointing stage, the efficacy against wheat sheath blight declined markedly. These results indicate that the pre‑jointing period is the optimal window for managing sheath blight; applying 10–20 mL per mu of a 24% thiophanate‑methyl suspension concentrate effectively suppresses the disease, reduces the occurrence of white spikes, and yields significant yield increases.
