On September 29, the Department of Crop Production of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs convened a symposium on scientific and technological innovation in the agrochemical industry in Beijing, chaired by Pan Wenbo, Chief Agronomist of the Ministry and Director-General of the Department of Crop Production (also responsible for pesticide management). Representatives from 20 agrochemical companies, including Beijing Yingtai, Lansheng Bio, Qingdao Qingyuan, Nantong Jiangshan, and Lier Chemical, attended the meeting and shared their views. Officials from the Pesticide Testing Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the China Pesticide Industry Association, and the China Pesticide Development and Application Association also participated.
The meeting thoroughly implemented the spirit of the National Agricultural Science and Technology Work Conference and the Symposium on Strengthening the Leading Role of Innovation Entities in Agricultural Science and Technology, and heard the views and suggestions of pesticide enterprises on technological innovation and pesticide management.
The meeting noted that pesticides are an essential input for agricultural production, and the sound development of the pesticide industry is a crucial foundation for ensuring both agricultural production safety and food safety. In recent years, China’s capacity for innovation in pesticide science and technology has continued to strengthen, yet a certain gap remains when compared with international advanced standards. To advance pesticide-related scientific and technological innovation, it is imperative to closely track cutting-edge fundamental research and key generic technologies, while staying attuned to the needs of agricultural production, and to continuously bolster independent, original innovation capabilities. Furthermore, the leading role of pesticide enterprises in technological innovation must be fully leveraged by encouraging them to increase R&D investment and build robust talent teams, strengthening collaboration with research institutes and upstream and downstream stakeholders, and, based on their own strengths, pursuing distinctive and innovative R&D initiatives.
The meeting called on pesticide regulatory authorities at all levels to establish and improve a regular, coordinated service mechanism, actively coordinate with relevant departments, and provide enterprises with innovation support in areas such as research projects, fiscal funding, and financial credit. Pesticide industry associations should strengthen self-regulatory management, help implement national industrial policies, promptly heed the concerns of enterprises, and submit recommendations and suggestions to the government. Pesticide companies must operate in compliance with the law and deliver services with integrity. All stakeholders in the pesticide industry are urged to work together in solidarity and align their efforts, leveraging scientific and technological innovation to drive high-quality development of the sector.
