On September 29, the Department of Crop Production of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs convened a symposium on technological innovation in the agrochemical industry in Beijing, chaired by Pan Wenbo, Chief Agronomist of the Ministry and Director-General of the Department of Crop Production (also responsible for pesticide management). Representatives from 20 agrochemical companies, including Beijing Yingtai, Lansheng Bio, Qingdao Qingyuan, Nantong Jiangshan, and Lier Chemical, attended the meeting and shared their insights. Officials from the Pesticide Testing Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the China Pesticide Industry Association, and the China Pesticide Development and Application Association also participated.

The meeting thoroughly implemented the spirit of the National Agricultural Science and Technology Work Conference and the Symposium on Strengthening the Leading Role of Innovation Entities in Agricultural Science and Technology, and heard the views and suggestions of pesticide enterprises on scientific and technological innovation and pesticide management.

The meeting noted that pesticides are essential agricultural inputs, and the sound development of the pesticide industry is a crucial foundation for ensuring both agricultural production safety and food safety. In recent years, China’s capacity for innovation in pesticide science and technology has continued to strengthen; however, it still lags behind international advanced standards. To advance pesticide-related scientific and technological innovation, it is imperative to closely track cutting-edge fundamental research and key generic technologies, while remaining attuned to the needs of agricultural production, and to continuously bolster independent, original innovation capabilities. Furthermore, pesticide enterprises must be fully empowered to play a leading role in technological innovation, with support for increased R&D investment and talent development, enhanced collaboration with research institutions and upstream and downstream stakeholders, and the leveraging of their own strengths to pursue distinctive, high‑value‑added innovations.

The meeting called for pesticide regulatory authorities at all levels to establish and improve a regular, coordinated service mechanism, actively liaise with relevant departments, and provide enterprises with innovation‑support measures in areas such as research projects, fiscal funding, and financial credit. Pesticide industry associations are urged to strengthen self‑regulation, assist in implementing national industrial policies, promptly heed the concerns of enterprises, and submit recommendations and suggestions to the government. Pesticide manufacturers must operate in compliance with the law and deliver services with integrity. All stakeholders in the pesticide sector should work together in solidarity, align their efforts, and leverage scientific and technological innovation to drive high‑quality development of the pesticide industry.
